Socio-cultural exchange - Kings College, London

A group of students and faculty from Kings College, London visited the College and tehy had a fruitful interaction with students of the department.


Workshop on vermicomposting (11.11.14)

A short workshop cum hands on training was conducted for students on vermicomposting technique.  Sri. Raghunatha kartha, an expert and resource person of Shuchithwa Mission sheme of Kerala State Govt. delivered the lecture and gave trainings.


Lab visit - Research department of Biotechnology, KVM College of Engineering (10.11.14)

Final year studnents of the department lead by the faculty visited the research department of biotechnology. Had an amazing exposure to various research equipments,techniques and lectures from the host institution faculty.


Seminar on 'Interdisciplinary Studies in Marine Sciences' (10.10.14)

Department of Zoology , St. Michael's College and  'Sustainable Fisheries Research Foundation (SUSFISH)', a conservation NGO based at Cochin together organised a One Day Seminar on 'Interdisciplinary Studies in Marine Sciences'. The classes were lead by three Research Scholars from the University of Amsterdam, The Netherlands - Mr. Joeri Scholtens (the Netherlands), Ms. Annisa Triyanti (Indonesia) and Mr. Johny Stephen (India). The prgram was intended to create an awareness about the importance of interdisciplinary studies. Various interdixciplinary approaches in solving problems and isssues of concern world over are discussed. The seminar also aimed to inculcate interdisciplinar research aptitude among students. The seminar was coordinated by Dr. Antony P.J.


Vermicomposting (25.09.14)

The department established an additional high capacity vermicompost unit in the College campus. Students and staff of the department initialised the process by preparing a windrow set up for the preliminary degradation of the raw materials.


Research extension (22.09.14)

Students and teachers of St. Augustine's HS, Mararikulam spent time in the Department, doing research experiments in the lab for the completion of their project on primary and secondary productivity of marine waters in mudbank areas. Teachers from the department Prof. Annie Jose K. and Dr. Antony P.J. guided the students by giving lectures on the aspect and helping them to do the analysis.


Field visit - Chakara (Mudbank) (19.09.14)

As part of the curriculum, students and staff of the Department of Zoology visited Arthunkal Beach to conduct a study about the peculiar phenomenon, Mudbank and also its associated fishery. Students collected scientific information regarding the phenomenon from literature and also gathered traditional knowledge from fishermen at the site.


ZEST 2014-15 (03.09.14)

The inauguration of Zoology Students Association (ZEST) for the academic year 2014-15 was held in the College Auditorium. Principal Dr. V. Mathew presided over the function. Dr. G. Nagendra Prabhu, Asst. Professor from Postgraduate and Research Department of Zoology, Sanathana Dharma College, Alappuzha was the Chief Guest, inaugurated the function. After the inaugural ceremony Dr. G. Nagendra Prabhu delivered a talk on ‘The new wonder plants of Kerala’. He introduced and displayed a lot of by-products prepared out of water hyacinth. In the afternoon students of the department performed various cultural programmes.


ZAS Reunion (31.08.14)

The Get-together of Zoologists Alumni of St. Michael's College was conducted on 31st August 2014 at College Auditorium.  All retired teachers of the department, ZAS executive members and alumni of different batches starting from 1976-79 batch took part in the programme.


Taekwondo Club inauguration (08.08.14)

Owing to the growing physical and mental abuses that women confront in their daily lives St. Michael's has initiated Taekwondo, a Korean Martial Art, sessions for girl students on the campus. The programme which is a joint venture of the Women Cell and the Department of Zoology was inaugurated by the Manager, Rev. Fr. Solomon Charanghat on 8th Augusth 2014 in the presence of an overwhelming crowd. Smt. Sharoon Rose of II B.Sc. Zoology, who is an adept practician of the art has been chosen to lead the sessions.


Onam Celebration (05.08.14)

Staff and students of the department celebrated the major Festival of Kerala - Onam by making flower carpet, arranging Onasadya (High Lunch) and participation in various games organised by the College.


Socio cultural exchange (01.08.14)

A group of students from Germany and Italy visited the department on 1st August 2014 for an interaction. Teachers and students of the department discussed various aspects related to the studies of students of both sides. The visitors were also given awareness in the Zoology Museum about various groups of organisms present in such a tropical region like Kerala. They wondered by seeing some endemic organisms which are unfamiliar to them.

Career mentoring programme (31.07.14)

The department of Zoology of the college organised a Career Mentoring Programme on 31.07.2014. The programme entitled ‘Career prospects in biological sciences’ targeted first and final year zoology students with the intention to motivate and enrich their knowledge on prospects of the course they chose. Dr. John Thomas, Rtd. Associate Professor from Christ College, Iringalakuda was the resource person.

BA English students visit (25.07.14)

I year BA English students visited the department to get an awareness about the importance and opportunities of major discipline zoology. The staff of the department of Zoology introduced and explained the details in brief to the students.

Awareness programme (18.07.14)

The department and Nature Club jointly organised an awareness programme for public stakeholders and students of St. Michael’s College at Green Pasture, Mayithara on 18th July 2014. Sri. Mahesh Mangad, Director of Thapovanam, Cochin delivered a class on ‘Paramparya Vaidyashastrathinte Natarivukal’ (Traditional knowledge on primitive ayurvedic medicines). The programme was organised in relation with the beginning of the Malayalam month ‘Karkadakam’, preferred time for effective ayurvedic treatments in our body.

NAAC preparation mock visit (16.07.14)

A mock visit was conducted by College IQAC on 16th July 2014 to all the departments. Evaluation of the department was made from presentation, discussion and inspection of files. Expert committee gave comments and noted areas to be improved.



1.  Prof. Annie Jose K., HoD of Zoology was honoured as the ‘Best Teacher’ by the college management on 30.05.2014 during ‘Koinonia 2014’ (a fellowship gathering of teachers).

2.  The final year BSc Zoology students organised their social on 22.05.2014.

3.  On 17.05.2014 a get-together of students of 2010-’13 batch was organised by Zoology Alumni Association (ZAS).

4.  The department signed an MoU with Sustainable Fisheries Research Foundation (SUSFISH), a Non-Governmental Organisation with Headquarters at Muvattupuzha. The understandings are in collaborative research in the field of fisheries research in Western Ghats.

5.  Department organised an invited talk on ‘Marine Biodiversity’ on 26.03.2014. Dr. Eldose P. Mani, Executive Trustee, Sustainable Fisheries Research Foundation (SUSFISH), Muvattupuzha was the resource person.

6.  On 18.03.2014 College conducted the ‘Sports Day’. Students from Department of Zoology bagged the overall second place in the competitions. Also got frst place in the March Past competition.

7.  The students of Department of Zoology participated in the ‘Students Wetland Congress’, which was organised by Ashoka Trust for Research in Environment and Education (ATREE) at Alappuzha on 05.02.2014 and bagged the ‘Best paper presentation award’ with certificate and cash prize.

8.  In co-operation with District medical office of Alappuzha, the department conducted a seminar on Reproductive and child health on 31.01.2014. Dr. the programme was inaugurated by Dr. R. Vivek kumar, DyDMO, Alappuzha. There were four sessions. In the first session Dr. Jingle Xavier, RHTC, Chettykad took a class on ‘LSCS/Normal delivery’. Second session was on ‘Pre-marital counselling’, which was handled by Smt. Jayakala, PRO, CHC Muhamma. In the third session Smt. Suja P.S., Dy.District Mass Media Officer took a class on ‘Life skill development’. The last session was on ‘Cardiovascular diseases’ by Dr. Sajithkumar, Asso. Professor from Dept. of Community medicine, TDMC.

9.  On 25.01.2014 students of II year Bsc Zoology visited Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute, Cochin along with teachers Dr. Antony P.J and Ms. Patricia Michael. It was a nice experience for students to visit the Marine Biodiversity Referral Museum, Marine Aquarium and Library at CMFRI. Students also visited ‘Mangalavanam Bird Sanctuary’ and ‘India International Aquashow’ at Marine Drive, Cochin.

10.  As part of the curriculum the department conducted a study tour for final year B.Sc. Zoology students to Wayanad and Ooty during 10th to 14th December, 2013 to study various biomes, ecosystems.

11.  The department celebrated World Aids Day (1st December) by organising an awareness talk on ‘AIDS- Causes and Prevention’ by Ms. Patricia Michael, Assistant Professor, Dept. of Zoology, St. Michael’s College on 2nd December, 2013. The Zoology Department Students Association (ZEST) organised an Inter-departmental  Poster Competition on 4th  December, 2013.

12. World Diabetes Day (14th November) was celebrated on 13th November, 2013 by organising a diabetes detection camp and awareness seminar. The programme was organised in collaboration with Mathruvedi-Pithruvedi Associations of Sacred Heart Church, Mayithara. The programme was inaugurated by Sri. P. Thilothaman, MLA of Cherthala at Green Pasture, Mayithara. Diabetes Detection was carried out by Community Health Centre, Muhamma under the leadership of Dr. Sreedevei and Ms. Salini and the awareness talk was delivered by Ms. Suja P.S., DEMO from DMO office, Alappuzha.

13. To provide an exposure to students the slew of modern equipment used in laboratories, students and staff of the department made a visit to the lab of KVM College of Engineering and Information Technology, Cherthala on 24th October 2013. Lecture-cum-demonstration classes were conducted by Dr. M. Kannan, HoD, Department of Biotechnology and Research Centre and Ms. Salini, faculty of the Department.

14. Arranged awareness class on environment protection on 1st Joby Paul from Ashoka Trust for Research in Ecology and Environment (ATREE) took class on ‘Antropocenic impact’

15. Onam festival was celebrated on 12th September, 2013 with the participation of department students in various competitions (Pookalam, Onapattu, kaserakali etc.) and organising Onasadya.

16. A seminar was organised on 10th 5. September, 2013 in collaboration with Kinder Women’s Hospital, Cherthala. Dr. Manoj Babu, Robotic Surgeon took class on ‘Gynecology Oncology’.

17. ZEST-EXPO was organised on 2nd and 3rd September, 2013.

18. On the auspicious day of ‘Njanttuvela’ on 1st 7. September, 2013 student volunteers of Nature Club actively joined in transplanting paddy seedlings at Ezhupunna Panchayath, Puthenkaripadam

19. Inauguration of the activities of Zoology Students Association (ZEST) for the year 2013-’14 on 30th August, 2013 with an invited talk from Dr. Anu Joseph of St. Teresa’s College, Ernakulam on ‘Nutrition and Health’.

20. On 15th July, 2013 Dr. Antony P.J. and three students from II B.Sc. Zoology attended a ‘One Day Workshop on Organic Farming and Food Security’ at Muhamma which was organised by Ashaka Trust for Research in Ecology and Environment (ATREE), Alappuzha.

21. On 17th July 2013 students of Final B.Sc. Zoology and staff of Department went for field visit to Thykal Beach to experience the natural phenomenon ‘Chakara’. Students gathered information on the phenomenon by direct observation as well as by having long interactions with traditional fishermen in the spot.

22. On 3rd July, 2013 Prof. Annie Jose K, Head of the Department of Zoology conducted an orientation class for parents and students of I semester Zoology on Choice Based Credit and Semester System (CBCSS), which the University is following for B.Sc. Zoology.

23. On 26th June, 2013 department organised an invited talk on ‘Applications of Information Technology’. Sri. Aju P. Benjamin, Faculty from Leo XIII HSS, Alappuzha was the resource person.

24. On 8th June 2013 World Oceans Day was celebrated by the department by arranging a special talk on ‘Living Oceans’ by Dr. Antony P.J., Assistant Professor, St. Michael’s College.


1. Organising seminars and medical camps to benefit the health of society. We already organised 1) Diabetes Detection Camp, 2) seminar on Diabetes – causes and prevention, 3) seminar on ‘Gynecology Oncology and 4) awareness programme on Iodine Deficiency Diseases.

2. Helps plus-two students from nearby schools to analyse water samples for finding out the quality parameters like DO, pH etc.

3. Associate with ‘Pokkali samrakshana samithy’, Ezhupunna Panchayath to revive the abandoned paddy cultivation in pokkali fields

4. Associate with ‘Ashoka Trust for Research in Ecology and Environment (ATREE)’ for promoting nature conservation activities and organic farming

5. Gives consultancy to traditional shrimp farmers in water quality management, seed selection, rising FCR etc.

6. Helps the local people to identify snakes


1) State level seminar on “Lifestyle and Cancer” sponsored by UGC was conducted on 26th July, 2012.

2) National Seminar on "Recent advances in Arboviral Diseases and Control" sponsored by UGC was conducted on 6th & 7th February, 2009.

Best practices of the Department

1. Mentoring system – 10 students from each class is allocated under a faculty (mentor) and he/she will give individual attention to monitor his/her academics including attendance, punctuality, result and other performances, inculcate moral values and give proper guidance for a successful career.

2. Tutorial system – The three staff members of the department are in-charges of each batch of students. He/she will follow-up the timely registration, fees remittance, attendance, improvement etc. of students.

3. Remedial coaching – Conduct regular remedial theory and practical classes for academically weaker students.

4. Scholar Support Programme (SSP) - Targetting weaker students

5. Walk With Scholar (WWS) - Target studious students to mentor them to improve their learning and research aptitude

6. Regularly conduct seminars and invited talks related to human health and nature conservation.

7. Every year regularly celebrates World Environment Day, World Oceans Day, World Diabetes Day, World Aids Day
