Inauguration of Chemistry Forum

The Chemistry Forum for the year 2014-15 was inaugurated by Dr. Nisha P. Scientist, NIIST, Thiruvananthapuram on 24th September 2014.  Dr. Nisha delivered a talk on “Chemistry of Foods”.

                              

World Ozone Day Celebrations

The Department of Chemistry of St. Michael’s College organized the International Ozone Day celebrations (IOD 2014) on 8th of October, 2014, supported by Kerala State Council for Science, Technology and Environment (KSCSTE), Thiruvananthapuram. Dr. Sreekumaran Nair A, Amrita Centre for Nanoscience and Molecular Medicine, Kochi inaugurated the programme and addressed the students. The talk delivered by Dr. Sreekumaran Nair on ‘Nanotechnology in Ozone Mitigation’ gave the importance of ozone in our present environmental condition. An intercollegiate debate competition on “Revolution in Technology and Existence of Ozone” was also conducted.

Inauguration of Chemistry Forum

The Chemistry Forum for the year 2013-14 was inaugurated by Sri. Ajeesh K. S. Scientist, ISRO, Thiruvananthapuram.  Mr. Ajeesh delivered a talk on “Chemistry in Every Day Life”.

   

National Seminar on Recent Advances in Photochemistry (NSPC 2013)

A two day National Seminar on  Recent Advances in Photochemistry (NSPC 2013) was organized by Department of Chemistry, St. Michael’s College, Cherthala in association with Inter University Instrumentation Centre, Mahatma Gandhi University, Kottayam, Kerala on 5th and 6th December 2013. The seminar was sponsored by University Grants Commission, India. A total of 150 members participated in the programme, which included the students, research scholars, scientists and teachers from here as well as from the neighboring institutions/colleges. The seminar was inaugurated by Dr. Ajit Prabhu, Joint Director,Kerala State Council for Science, Technology and Environment (KSCSTE), Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala and delivered the keynote address. Invited talk

Department of Chemistry and College Library jointly organized a talk on “Colorful Chemistry” by Dr. Mahesh Hariharan, Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER), Thiruvananthapuram.

Science Exhibition

The Chemistry Department arranged a stall in the Science Exhibition held by Leo XIII HSS, Alappuzha.

  

 

Inauguration of Chemistry Association

Chemistry association was inaugurated by Sri. Aravind K., Assistant Professor, Department of Chemistry, S.B. College, Changanassery. He delivered a talk on ‘Research today’.

  

Inauguration of Research Laboratory

The research laboratory of department of Chemistry was inaugurated by His Excellency Rt. Rev. Dr. Stephen Athippozhiyil, Bishop of Alappuzha Diocese. Major funding for the laboratory came through two major projects of Dr. P. Manoj, one from University Grants Commission (UGC) for Rs. 11,60,800/- and the other from Department of Science and Technology (DST), Government of India for Rs.30,00,000/- (approximate, fund is not yet released from DST).  Apart from these two projects the department has to its credit two minor projects also (both from UGC). Mrs. Seena Elizabeth George and Dr. Pearl Augustine are the principal investigators of these minor projects. These projects have a funding of Rs. 80,000/- and Rs. 90,000/- respectively.

 

Study Tour – B Sc.

The Chemistry Department organized a three days study tour for Final semester B Sc Chemistry students to Auto Cast and Wayanad on 24-26 January 2013.

Postgraduate students of the department visited Amrita Center for Nanosciences and Molecular Medicine, Kochi.

Activities 2011 -2012

National Seminar on Frontiers in NMR Spectroscopy (SPECTRA-2011)

A two-day National Seminar on Frontiers in NMR Spectroscopy was organized by Department of Chemistry, St. Michael’s College, Cherthala on 28th and 29th July 2011. The seminar was sponsored by University Grants Commission (UGC), India. A total of 100 members participated in the programme, which included the students, research scholars, scientists and teachers from here as well as from the neighbouring institutions/colleges. The seminar was inaugurated by Prof. N. Suryaprakash, Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore on 28th July 2011. The resource persons for the programme were, Prof. N. Suryaprakash, NMR Research Centre, Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, Dr. B. Jagadeesh, Indian Institute of Chemical Technology, Hyderabad, Dr. Vinesh Vijayan, IISER, Thiruvananthapuram and Dr. Bejoy Thomas, Department of Chemistry, Newman College, Thodupuzha.

 

Inauguration of Chemistry Association

Chemistry association was inaugurated on 13th January 2012 by Prof. S. Sugunan (Emeritus Professor, Department of Applied Chemistry, Cochin University of Science and Technology, Kochi). He delivered an invited talk on “Fourier Transform Spectroscopy”. Chemistry association also conducted an intercollegiate quiz competitionon the same day.

Release of Science Magazine – Alchemi 2011

Chemistry association released the first issue of science magazine named “Alchemi”.It is a publication of Department of Chemistry. The intension of this magazine is to kindle the interest in learning Chemistry among students.

Invited Talk by Prof. Taiha Joo

Department of Chemistry organized and invited talk by Prof. Taiha Joo, Department of Chemistry, Pohang University of Science and Technology, South Korea.Prof. Joo was the Erudite Visiting Professor under the Erudite Scholar-in-Residence programme by Kerala State Higher Education Council.  

National Science Day

Departmentorganized a seminar on Chemistry, Man and Environment. Dr. Kuruvila Joseph, Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology was the resource person. The seminar was sponsored by Kerala State Council for Science, Technology and Environment (KSCSTE) and Department of Science and Technology (DST), India.
